A life in flow

How are you feeling right now versus how do you think you *should* be feeling?⠀

Do you ever have expectations on yourself that you *should* feel happy, that you *should* feel energised, be productive, be social, do this, and do that, to keep showing up because that’s what we’re told... but really, you just don't want to?

Have you ever noticed that, after you make a big call or change in your life, it’s often followed by a time of withdrawal? When all we want to do is take a wee moment, turn inwards, and shut the world off for a bit. But this withdrawal is not valued nor encouraged in our culture. Our culture demands constant expansion. Therapists, coaches and healers purport it. Capitalism thrives on it. But it’s against our grain.

We experience, and are, states of both contraction and expansion. This is our nature.

Just as night reaches its darkest point, to shift into light dawning the world again…. Just as your hormones shift and change causing valleys and peaks in energy and mood throughout the day, and throughout your cycle…. Just as your lungs fill, and then collapse, to fill again…. Just as your heart contracts, causing a wave of pressure for blood to flow, then briefly expanding to allow more blood to come in….

As long as you live this pattern never changes.

This is the rhythm of life.

Your entire soul throbs with it.

By tuning in to and moving with the pulsation of this energy in our bodies, we move closer to understanding our own true nature, and the nature of life. There are times where we naturally feel expanded, literally ‘swollen with light’. There are other times when we feel dull or agitated, contracted. Both states are normal, and they’re natural elements of the ebb and flow of our lives. One is not better than the other.

Contraction is beautiful. And natural. And necessary.

And it is in the very darkest, deepest, sharpest points of pain where the contraction begins to shift into expansion.

But often we want to push past it. We have had enough, there is not time and it is uncomfortable. We want the expansion, the light, the growth and momentum forwards.  This is not sustainable. This is pure masculine energy without the counterbalance of the feminine. This way of being is detrimental and in disharmony to the natural pulsation of life.

We must instead be able to cultivate the ability to sit with the contraction, and as we do tune into the throb of life that pulses through the very essence of who we are, and in doing so we give ourselves the gift of becoming fully, sensually alive.

So if you are here in the period of withdrawal, instead of resisting it choose to succumb to it and cultivate the patience to sit in the discomfort. Listen to the wisdom that whispers ‘release that’, ‘say goodbye to this’, ‘pause’, and ‘reconsider’. The dark is your wise friend. By really tuning into these periods in life we can then truly welcome in the gifts that will inevitably emerge.

But heed the warning.

When we tune out and favour doing, doing, doing, we can lose sight of ourselves.

I know that place well, after years of living in intense living conditions in a high pressured job, this was me to a tee. In this state of prolonged resistance to pausing to honour the natural phases of contraction, I ironically ended up in a dull and persistent state of being that was narrow, dry, and hard.

I arrived here in the habituation of constant doing, using adrenaline and stimulants to propel me forward but without really clear direction, as I was totally out of touch with myself, and my natural state of being.

This dull and hardened place is not my, nor your natural state, our natural state desires to flow, in sensual freedom. To ebb, then flow, and ebb and flow in a glorious cycle of life.

But wow…., it’s impossible to even think that life could be easeful and flowing when you’re stuck in that place of resistance.

If there are two pieces of advice I could give my past self it is this

  1. Nothing in this life needs to be walked alone; and

  2. Your body never lies.

Body-led inquiry is profoundly helpful in releasing the tension that is building within, and reconnecting you with your essence. Tuning into the wisdom that lies within your body is a powerful way to move into states of clarity, flow, creativity, truth, pleasure and magnetism.

If you too desire some support I offer deep private mentoring sessions which integrate psychology, feminine embodiment, neuroscience, and my energetic gifts.
