Womb Wisdom: Cyclical Living

Do you want to thrive with calm, ease, and grace, instead of push?

It’s not our way is it? Our culture is linear, one that has us constantly doing, ever-achieving and writing out to-do lists that seem never-ending.

Competition is the norm, fed by an inbuilt narrative of scarcity which leaves us feeling like we are never enough, and we never have enough. We are in constant survival mode, our bodies are running on cortisol (the fight or flight/stress hormone) and adrenalin, which is neither effective nor sustainable to living our best life, and leads to feelings of burn out and depression.

We are suffering in this world, and the world is suffering for it.

We are totally disconnected to our natural way of being. For Mother Nature teaches us that we are not linear beings, but cyclical.

A Cycle for Everything

There is a cyclical blueprint across all aspects and facets of life, from the turning of day to night and day, to ancient patterns of extinction and rebirth, to the seasons, to the cycle of sexual response, to the lunar phases.

All in cycle.

Our wombs hold this incredible wisdom within. Holding both the promise of new life, as well as regular periods of destruction and death… only to rebuild again.

Life goes in cycles. Death is life, life is death. And so on, forever. Evident everywhere.

The Seasons

I love referring to the cycles as seasons, as these really embody the qualities that are present in everything, if only we looked

  • Spring – follicular – waxing moon: Creative, planning, inspiring.

  • Summer – ovulation – full moon: Visible, invigorating, yang energy.

  • Autumn – luteal – waning moon: Evaluative, tying off loose ends and closing down.

  • Winter – menstruation – new moon: Reflective, intuitive, stillness, yin energy.

When you read these, which season do you most look forward to?

Our culture loves the Spring and the Summer and we’ve been conditioned to as well. These are times of celebration, for here we find the culmination of all that we have been striving for - at least so it goes in our linear, achievement oriented and outcome focused (patriarchal) world.

But this means we bypass the phases of autumn and the winter and in doing so ignore the natural way of life. Autumn and the winter are necessary for integration, evolution, and rest, and they are essential if life is to begin again anew, they are necessary for us to flourish and thrive. Constantly living our lives and running our businesses in the seasons of Summer and Spring way becomes hard, it requires more consistent effort and eventually we burn ourselves out.

By reconnecting with a cyclical way of living we say no to the unsustainable and destructive way of life directed by the Patriarchy. Instead we choose differently. We listen more and rest. Cyclical living calls us into our bodies and connects us with mother nature. It is when we are connected in this way that we can really honour what is truly needed, and in doing so we find balance, harmony and we thrive.

Womb Wisdom

I have certainly found this in reconnecting with my menstrual cycle. By really listening deep I developed a new and profound relationship with my womb and my body. And the more I listened, the more I heard.

I formed new relationships with my inner Autumn and the Winter, and found qualities and unique gifts that these seasons offer. I found in honouring the qualities of the cycles I also found my personal means to balance my  Feminine and Masculine energies. I now sync my calendar – projects, passions, social - to match my cycle and in listening and identifying what I need I have developed self-care habits that support me depending on where I am at – including making peace with my need to rest and spend time in the ‘being’ rather than the doing. I can harness the instinctual tendency to focus on details (not normally my forte) and I found the real truth in those feelings that I once would have dismissed as PMS.

I now truly treasure each phase for it holds its own gifts, and none is better than the other.

It has been a radical doorway to wellbeing, to connecting with my body, strengthening my intuition and really ignited my journey into the feminine energy and reclaiming more embodied ways of living.

And this is a much more sustainable, enjoyable, and easeful way to live

Cyclical Living is for everyone

Cyclical living is not just for people with wombs or for people who are still in their bleeding phase. As it is in nature, it is for us. It is a pathway and an invitation to a life in greater balance and harmony.
